Nothing says "Be Mine" Like a romantic novel (January 21st, 2008)
Gettysburg author to sign her Civil War novel in Brunswick, Md. Feb. 1Critically acclaimed author Jessica James will sign her debut novel SHADES OF GRAY at the Book Crossing, 2 East Potomac St. in Brunswick, Md. on Friday, Feb. 1, from 5 to 9 p.m.
James penned the epic love story from her home in Gettysburg, Pa., but the plot of the Civil War novel takes place south of the Mason-Dixon line in northern Virginia.
“I once lived in Virginia and fell in love with the history and beauty of the area,” James said. “Virginia is a special place, and I’ve been overwhelmed and honored with the feedback I’ve been receiving from readers.”
One such reader is Catherine Bennett, who calls SHADES OF GRAY “a beautiful story with a timeless message… It touched my heart and soul.”
James noted that a book might not be the first thing one thinks of giving for Valentine’s Day, yet it can be the perfect gift. “Books have a way of being remembered and cherished,” she said. “A special, signed copy shows your special someone that you really care.”
Civil War author Virginia Morton agrees with other praise for the book, calling it “an incredible achievement and a treasure,” while Foreword Magazine notes that James “captures the pure essence of the war that nearly tore the heart out of the United States.”
The plot follows a Confederate cavalry commander and a Union spy across the rolling hills of northern Virginia as they defend their beliefs, their country, and their honor. The plot exposes the private side of the men and women who took part in the desperate conflict as they struggle with fulfilling their duty to God and country while remaining true to their own hearts and minds.
The Book Review Journal says the debut novel is “well written and expertly executed… You cannot leave this book unchanged in your understanding of the souls of the Civil War.”
