Will Healthcare IT Trends Standardize? (March 27th, 2008)

As we all know there are dramatic changes taking place in the healthcare market-changes that will impact all of us in the coming years. Whether it is new government regulations or patients pushing for access to their healthcare information, the fact is, these activities are driving transformation within the market. Many governments and companies are working hard to create online systems that extend business processes to constituents-including partners, customers, and citizens for government agencies-with promises of reducing processing costs, eliminating paper costs, shortening process cycle times, and providing better more co-ordinated care. The problem is that these systems are hard to develop and implement, and they are not consistently adopted. If we add to this the differences in needs between Provinces and differing privacy and data collection requirements, the challenge seems almost insurmountable. However, one way to solve this challenge is to develop and adopt standards and best practices which can help improve the connectivity between systems and more easily allows for sharing of information between organizations.
