CSA denies alcohol abuse in team (August 02nd, 2007)

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has denied reports trainer Adrian le Roux quit as the physical trainer of the team due to alcohol abuse by some players. The comments were allegedly made by le Roux in a confidential document prepared by him. Without taking any names, le Roux had reported that some of the team members were just not matured and responsible enough and the abundant use of alcohol by team members was certainly not helping matters. He however pointed out that not all members were using alcohol, but some of them were doing so and it was affecting their performance.

CSA however says that he resigned as he wanted to spend more time with his family at Bloemfontein. The board says that they accepted his resignation very reluctantly and they respect his wishes of traveling less and spending quality time with his family. The board further adds that all concerns that arose after South Africa’s exit from the World Cup have been dealt with. An internal conducted by the board found that a number of players had been drinking at night after the match against New Zealand.

Nonetheless it is widely believed that le Roux quit the team as he was extremely disturbed by the alcohol abuse by the players and also the fact that the players did not take note of the advice that had put for the team. Le Roux also made it very clear that his report was not meant for the public and that the report was made and submitted a part of his duties to report the physical fitness levels of the players. Incidentally South Africa reached the semi final of the World Cup before they were outplayed by eventual champions Australia.
